the balmoral beach house

The Balmoral Beach House is an addition and renovation to an original 1920's bungalow close to Balmoral Beach, Sydney. The client wanted a family home that spoke it’s context; the beach, the nature reserve opposite the house, as well as it’s past as an interwar housing settlement of small brick bungalows. The house has an unusual feature for its area in that at adjoins a well-used public walkway which is bustling with locals making their way to the beach on foot.  The clients value this community and wanted the home to maintain a connection with the walkway so they could chat to the people walking past. Our response the Brief was to reference its place and time through the use of locally sourced materials and the retention of original features from the former bungalow house. The house is open and inviting to friends and strangers alike. It is an unfussy and robust response to the site and its interior is a warm and inviting space well suited for a family
